When I was a lad my family and I kept fowls in the back yard at home. They were the remnant of the old style of the hybrid layer - Leghorn cross Australorp I think. I can't remember how well or otherwise they laid eggs - I was only a child really. I can't even remember what colour the eggs were; probably white or pale cream. It didn't matter to me. I don't know if it mattered to my parents. I remember them grumbling about the cost of feeding the chickens, so the chickens probably didn't really earn their keep. Above: One of my standard-bred Australian Langshan cockerels. But that didn't matter to me. They were pets, and my brothers and I had one each and we gave them all na m e s . My hen was called 'Redhead'. We put different coloured leg bands on each of them in order to distinguish them. As if we needed to do that! Of course each hen was unique to each of us even though they may have all looked the same to anyone else. I guess you could say, that was not only the beginning of my chicken keeping journey, but that was our first home flock . Ever since then, over many years, and at various times, I have kept, developed, bred and cared for a home flock . Whether it was my later childhood foray into cross-bred cuckoo bantams or my first dabble into a standard-bred breed - blue Rose-comb bantams, I was learning all the time unconsciously, and building my admiration for these little winged creatures - the smallest of livestock, and my little friends. Since then, I have kept other breeds, hatched, grown and shown them, and vastly developed my chicken keeping knowledge, as well as my thoughts, viewpoints and attitudes toward keeping poultry. It is the benefit of such wisdom and insight that I freely offer to you on this site. Copyright © 2013. . All Rights Reserved.
